Aperol spritz is a loved drink during Summer. It is flavourful, light, and perfect on hot days. But when the colder season rolls around, Aperol drinks are on hiatus, waiting until it gets warmer again. But I declare Aperol a winter drink too when turning it into a delicious hot cocktail.

This wintry version of the beloved summer drink is super easy to make, does with just a few ingredients, and comes with a heavenly spiced flavor. Need I say more? Head to the recipe and make this delicious holiday drink in no time.

    Ingredient Notes

This hot Aperol does with just a few ingredients. Here is what you need:

ingredients for hot aperol on grey white background.
    • Aperol – The Italian aperitif comes with a bitter note which is a perfect addition to the sweet apple juice and honey.
    • White wine – Use a dry white wine like chardonnay, sauvignon blanc or Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, which are very common in Austria.
    • Apple juice – I used unsweetened clear apple juice in this recipe
    • Honey – I love the subtle flavour honey adds to the hot Aperol, but this recipe would also work with agave syrup.
    • Cinnamon – A cinnamon stick infuses the hot Aperol with the perfect amount of wintery spice.
    • Clove – Along with the cinnamon stick, the cloves add to the Christmas flavour and make for a comforting drink.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

cooking ingredients for christmas punch in small saucepan.
    1. Pour the Aperol, white wine, and apple juice into a medium-sized saucepan. Add the honey, cinnamon stick, and cloves.
    2. Warm up the mixture on the stove on medium heat. Make sure it does not start to boil. This would make the alcohol evaporate. Stir for about 2-3 minutes until the honey is dissolved and the mixture is hot.
    3. Remove the cinnamon stick and cloves and pour the hot Aperol into mugs and glasses. Garnish with an orange slice and cinnamon stick, and serve.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I substitute the Aperol in this recipe?

You can use Campari instead of Aperol in this recipe. Be aware that it will taste more bitter because Campari has a bitterer taste than Aperol.

Can I make this recipe in advance?

Yes, you can make this hot Aperol in advance and warm it up when you are ready to serve it. Make sure the mixture does not start to boil. This would make the alcohol evaporate.

How much alcohol does Aperol contain?

The Italian aperitif has an alcohol percentage of 11%, making it a relatively low-alcohol liquor.
