Even though this cocktail contains alcohol, you can still reap the nutrient benefits. Blood oranges and lemons pack a bunch of vitamin C and antioxidants, which help fight free radicals. So it’s technically a superfood juice with booze. Ha!

    Ingredient Notes

    • Blood oranges – When making drinks, I always use fresh fruits. The taste of fresh blood oranges is unbeatable, and it is easy to squeeze the juice out.
    • Lemon – This is also true for lemons. I always freshly squeeze them because the taste is so much better.
    • Vodka – I mostly use Grey Goose, Absolut or Stolichnaya Vodka, as these brands a perfect for cocktails. They are in the middle-range price segment, so you get good value for your money.
    • Ginger essence – The ginger essence makes all the difference in that citrusy cocktail. It adds a slightly spicy touch which is so delicious.
    • Agave syrup – A hint of agave syrup balances out the tangy citrus flavour.
    • Sparkling water – Adding sparkling water to the citrus cocktail makes it lighter and perfect to serve as an aperitif at parties and dinners.

    Tips & substitutions

    • Use freshly squeezed blood orange and lemon juice for this recipe. When it comes to flavour, using fresh organic fruits makes all the difference. Moreover, fresh fruits are free of added sugar and much more nutritious.
    • Don’t have ginger essence? Use homemade or store-bought ginger juice instead. Double or triple the amount if using juice, as the ginger essence is more concentrated.
    • Shake the ingredients with some ice cubes first. Then divide into glasses and add the sparkling water. It ensures you get a bubbly and well-tempered drink.

Where can I find ginger essence or juice? I can't seem to find either in any grocery stores near me.

Hey Alice, I always buy ginger essence in a speciality food store here in Vienna from a brand called "Gimber" . But can also grate ginger and extract the juice to spare you the hustle of finding it in your area.
