I know it seems like I’m late to the party when it comes to the coconut oil craze, but actually I’m using coconut oil for a couple of years now. I just always postponed writing a blog post about it because I really wanted to see overtime how coconut oil affects my skin, hair and beyond when using it over a long period. Now I think I gathered enough information and seen the effects to write this blog post and hopefully help you out in seeing how such a pure and natural substance can do wonders in your beauty routine.
First of all, I want to start out with giving you a little bit more information about this wonderful oil. Coconut oil is extracted from the kernel or meat of coconuts. It has almost endless applications and is also very edible. For example, I regularly use it for baking like in my Healthy Homemade Granola. Moreover, coconut oil has a number of health benefits like strengthening the immune system, improving bone health and helping with weight loss goals. But it can also serve various purposes that benefit your hair and skin while being much cheaper than a lot of beauty products. Here are all insights on how I’m using coconut oil on my skin, hair and body:
When I don’t straighten my hair and leave it curly I always massage some coconut oil into my damp hair after washing it. It really fights frizz, helps with breakage and makes my hair look and feel healthier in general. When I straighten my hair I also use it when I already blow-dried my hair to finish up. I just put a little amount on my dry hair-ends to nourish them and prevent splitting. I addition, I use coconut oil as a hair mask from time to time. Before washing I massage it into my hair and scalp, put a shower cap on and leave it in for 30 minutes. Then I wash and condition it normally and my hair feels stronger and shinier.
When I run out of eye cream or feel that my skin is very dry I just use coconut oil instead. It moisturizes the delicate skin around the eyes perfectly and can also be used under make-up although I just would recommend this if you have rather dry skin like me. Moreover I used it as a face oil replacement in winter when my skin is even drier than usual due to the temperatures. Although I have very sensitive skin I never had an issue breaking out when using coconut oil. Extra Tip: Mix your own lip scrub with coconut oil and brown sugar. Here is the recipe for my DIY Lip Scrub.
Yes, it is also the perfect oil to use on your body. I usually put it on once a week instead of my body lotion to make my skin soft and smooth. Another plus is that it instantly gives you major beach vibes because of the delicious coconut smell.
Have you ever heard of oil pulling? You put a spoon full of melted coconut oil into your mouth and swirl it around for 10 to 15 minutes before brushing your teeth. It is very awkward at first and you kind of have to get used to it but I like it so far. I feel like my teeth are much cleaner than without oil pulling and also a little whiter. Moreover, coconut oil is said to help keep your teeth strong and reduce plaque.
So for me, coconut oil has been an absolute essential in my beauty routine for the last couple of years and I don’t want to miss it anymore.
